What Type of Roof Covering Do I have?

Likely you have an asphalt roof covering, this is the most common type of roofing materials.

There are many different types of asphalt roof coverings. We will focus on two of them.

3-Tab Shingles

This type of roof covering is typically a lower life span roof covering. It looks like subway tiles. There is a rectangle tab, next to another, next to another.

Some of the defining features:

  • Each tab is one layer thick
  • Typically warranties are 15 to 20 years
  • They are designed for winds up to 60 miles per hour

This type of shingle will easily become loose over time and I will often find missing shingles after heavy winds and storms.

Dimensional Shingles

This type of roof covering looks architectural(3D) with many layers visible. There are different sized raised pieces on top of each shingle.

Some of the defining features:

  • Each tab is two or more layers bonded together
  • Typically warranties are 30 to 50 years
  • They are designed for winds up to 70 to 110 miles per hour

This type of roof covering wears better over the years and I will typically find less defects in this style of roof covering.

As you may have guessed a dimensional style of roof coverings cost more because you are paying for more material and a longer life span. In my opinion, totally worth it!
